Reading through chapters 1-13 I have come to like the book more than I thought I would. Though I dont think I’ve gone more than ten pages without seeing the word smoldering.
An important quote I picked up in my reading would be
“I decided it didnt matter,” I whispered…”it does not matter to me what you are.” PG 184
This quote seems to be the theme of this first half of the book to me. periodically we are reminded of just how dangerous Edward is through his emotional instability (seen when in his conversations with Bella and his own admittance to having trouble controlling his anger.) The fact he hunts lions and bears with his family, he admits wanting Bella blood and his own words when he says things like
“Im dangerous bella. I wish you could grasp that!” and similar phrases thoughout the book where he states that its dangerous for them to be friends.
Despite all of this, Bella finally comes to the conclusion that she simply does not care, that she can look past of these things that Edward thinks make him a “monster.”
Bella is not the only one who displays this sort of attitude either. Her father does as well when he defends the Cullen family from Bella when she says they are “weird.” Charlie does not care that the Cullen family is seen as weird because they are an asset to the community and he praises the doctors choice to work in forks even though eh can make more money elsewhere.
