Backstein Vampire Reading.

Reading through some literature and articles we see backstien point out that typically vampire novels are targeted towards women. To be more specific, young women. I wonder how the vampire genre might adapt to cater more towards men?

Looking at other readings, such as one by Ginny whitehouse, we see them talk about the depiction of the Quileute people. They talk about how some of the people think its great that they are getting any attention at all being such a small group that is already rarely talked about. Others say that they dislike how they were portrayed. I wonder if the impact has been a net positive or negative for the group.

Twilight Vs Lucifer.

After finishing the twilight book I notice big similarities between twilight and a Netflix series called Lucifer. Edward and Lucifer are both self described “Monsters” who worry that they hurt those around them simply by existing. they both go to great lengths to keep an arms length (emotionally and physically) from people to keep from hurting the ones they love. They are both mythical beings with Edward being a vampire and Lucifer being the devil himself. Even there powers are similar in that both have the ability to “dazzle” people to get what they want in social situations. The similarities are even down to the same plot. Both Edward and Lucifer are going after a girl who is “special” and both stories their powers dont work on only the one particular person they are in love with. Lastly, the family dynamic is much the same in that they tend to stick together and go to great lengths for others like them.

Their is of course some differences as well. The family in Lucifer is much more dysfunctional, unlike the Cullens who are incredibly tight knit group. In Lucifer, he is much more on equal terms with his love interest. In twilight I would not describe Bella and Edward as equal partners because Edward typically takes control of the situation without really taking Bellas wishes into account. Its also worth noting that the pacing is much different and the stakes are much higher in Lucifer. In Twilight they are fighting mostly just to keep Bella alive. Keeping Bella alive is of course important but frequently in Lucifer its more of a “save the world once a season” type of show rather than saving one person.

Twilight Chap 1-13

Reading through chapters 1-13 I have come to like the book more than I thought I would. Though I dont think I’ve gone more than ten pages without seeing the word smoldering.

An important quote I picked up in my reading would be

“I decided it didnt matter,” I whispered…”it does not matter to me what you are.” PG 184

This quote seems to be the theme of this first half of the book to me. periodically we are reminded of just how dangerous Edward is through his emotional instability (seen when in his conversations with Bella and his own admittance to having trouble controlling his anger.) The fact he hunts lions and bears with his family, he admits wanting Bella blood and his own words when he says things like

“Im dangerous bella. I wish you could grasp that!” and similar phrases thoughout the book where he states that its dangerous for them to be friends.

Despite all of this, Bella finally comes to the conclusion that she simply does not care, that she can look past of these things that Edward thinks make him a “monster.”

Bella is not the only one who displays this sort of attitude either. Her father does as well when he defends the Cullen family from Bella when she says they are “weird.” Charlie does not care that the Cullen family is seen as weird because they are an asset to the community and he praises the doctors choice to work in forks even though eh can make more money elsewhere.
